How to Teach Your Dog to Carry On Using The ‘Okay Command’.
Previously you taught your dog to ‘Wait’ which was a way of pausing what your dog wanted to do by teaching him some patience, which is distinctly different to the ‘Stay Command’ which is holding your pooch in a position until ‘released’ with another command.
One of the training exercises in the ‘Wait Command’ article was getting your dog to wait momentarily while you placed his/her food bowl on the floor. To release your dog from the ‘Wait’ I suggested using the word ‘Free’.
Typically, you would use the word ‘Free’ to release your dog from training commands altogether, allowing them, giving your pooch permission, to roam freely, run-a-muck, sniff and explore as they choose to.
The ‘Okay Command‘ is not really a command, it’s another release word to basically let your happy pooch know to carry on doing what he/she was wanting to do in the first place, before being asked to ‘Wait’.
So to summarise, use the release word ‘Free’ when you have finished with training and you are happy for your four-legged companion to do his/her own thing for a while, like sniffing that favourite tree, or run around the backyard and use the ‘Okay Command’ or release word when you are giving permission to carry on doing what they wanted to do, before you put them on pause with the ‘Wait Command’.
